The Books
Yes yes, that’s right! You have to read a lot of books out. Read Kotler, Seth Godin, Arindam Choudhary (IIPM wala). Your brain has to be filled up with knowledge before you start your career. Consumer Behavior, International marketing, branding are important aspects of a business, you must read loads of books about all of these.
Caution: Don’t forget ‘Statistical Analysis’ book. It is an eye opener. Very Relevant!
The Lectures
Your attendance has to be 100% in your lectures. If you miss one of those marketing lectures, you might lose the job you always wanted. It’s only during the lectures you decode the secrets of Apple and Google. The probability of you becoming a great marketer is directly proportional to how close you sit to the professor. So, mind you, always fight for the first bench!
The Assignments
If you are not doing them sincerely, God save you! However, if you copy them, believe you me, the interviewers can judge your actual knowledge. They are smart and will catch you. Do your assignments, all of them.
The Case Studies
How can you take them lightly? It’s only the case studies, reading which Steve Jobs made Apple. Before dying he accepted it, “I was thrown out of Apple because I became too confident and stopped solving Case Studies at home, but then I realized my mistake. I started solving case studies once again with a fresh mind and then the Apple board took over Pixar and I was taken back.”
The HBR
All vital points are falling in place. HBR is God’s voice (The Marketing God, he sits next to Lord Shiva – ya just right there). If you are a marketer, would you not read the Bible (of Marketing).
The CGPA
It’s do or die. You can cover up all above points in your life at ease, but if you couldn’t get that 4 point, there is no going back. If you are not great with CGPA and stuck with a bad one, who will ever certify you as a great Marketer?
You might even have to do that MBA all over again.
So marketers, if you are still pursuing MBA, this is where you must focus from right now.
The Marketing Professor
If by any means you are laughing (or even smiling) by looking at this point, you are one bad ass.
It’s the professor that gives you all the gyan (Marketing wala gyan). He/She tells you all the marketing in the world. Without him/her who is going to talk those 3 hours. If nobody is going to talk, then to whom are you going to listen to? And if you have no body to listen to then there will be no B Schools. Who the hell will give you degree and how will you call yourself a marketer?
The Kotler
Ahm! If anyone utters a word against this book, I am all set with a hammer.
Those colored pages and 1000 points under each heading. Very well organized Book (am I missing anything?). I have seen Philip Kotler referring to that book last time we met on a discussion on marketing services when he came to my house. OK, I agree he was a little lost and couldn’t find where he wrote about it. Anyways, it happens, we forget things!
In the end, he taught me how to market a book. He is going to introduce this chapter in next edition, ‘Marketing the value-less’
The Linkedin
Yet another Social Networking site! People waste a lot of time on finding random people on a website which they never even meet. To become a great marketer, you have to avoid all such time consuming activities, concentrate on HBR instead. Do not get carried away by the pretty photographs on dp.
The Bet
Don’t just watch porn in the hostel rooms. Pick up the newspaper and select a company. Have a discussion with your friends whether this company is going to work or not.
Analyze, research and figure out whether their marketing strategies are as you wanted them to be. Find out whether their ads are hitting the right target or not. Predict, and bet with money. If you win, you are a great marketer. Yeah.. That’s it. You made it.
Find flaws in businesses that are failing and figure out the reasons why that one business is on top.
The Business Plan
No No, not the implementation. That’s just a fag. It’s the number of business and marketing plans you make matters. 4Ps and SWOT, Life beyond that is called ‘spiritual’.
The Entrepreneurs
Don’t let entrepreneurs waste your time. They want to become entrepreneurs, and you want to become a marketer. You are not related. So whenever you see an entrepreneur around, run in other direction.
Social Media/Digital Marketing
Laugh at them when they talk to you about it. They are just nerds, glued with their computer. That’s about it. Rest assured, they cannot become great marketers, not even in the race.
